1. Aiea Bay State Recreation Area
This nature reserve is located at Kamehameha Hwy in Aiea and is only a 10-minute drive from Waipahu. Here, you can enjoy a relaxing picnic with family and friends along the banks of Pearl Harbor’s East Loch. There’s also a bike path available for cycling enthusiasts and several vantage points for sightseeing.
This recreation area is open every day from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, so you can plan your visit at a time that works best for you. Entrance to this spot is free, making it an affordable way to spend a day in the sun.
2. Wahiawa Freshwater State Recreation Area
This recreation area is located at 380 Walker Ave in Wahiawa, just a 15-minute drive from Waipahu. Here, you can enjoy a picnic near the beautiful Wahiawa Reservoir, also known as Lake Wilson. There’s a boat ramp available on-site, and boat fishing is permitted. However, swimming is not permitted in the reservoir.
There’s also a designated spot to park your trailer. This recreation area is open daily from 7:00 AM to 6:45 PM, and entrance is free.
3. Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area
Keaiwa Heiau is located on Aiea Heights Drive in Aiea, a mere 15-minute drive from Waipahu via I-H-1 E and Aiea Heights Dr. This nature reserve is open daily from 7:00 AM to 6:45 PM and spans a vast 384-acre of land, perfect for exploring. The crown jewel of the reserve is the Aiea Loop Trail, a 4.8-mile trail that winds through the scenic Halawa Valley.
Visitors can admire the lush greenery along the trail, including pines and eucalyptus trees that make up the park’s unique ecosystem. Camping is allowed in Keaiwa Heiau from Friday through Wednesday. Although dogs aren’t permitted in this recreation area, you can leash your furry friend as you make your way to the Aiea Loop Trail.
