O’ahu is a unique place best known for its dazzling scenery. But it’s not only in nature that this island shines. It is also a rich environment for culture and history, and along with that, bookstores. Here are some of our favorites that you can drive to in and around the Waipahu, HI area.

Drive on Over 4 Favorite Bookstores Near Waipahu, HI

Dragon’s Lair

Located at 95-1840 Meheula Pkwy E-10 in Mililani, just north of Waipahu, Dragon’s Lair is undeniably one of the finest comic stores we’ve had the pleasure of visiting on the island. The owner is truly accommodating, going above and beyond to fulfill requests and secure comics or graphic novels that patrons are after. Their expansive selection of graphic novels and manga makes them a must-visit for collectors, and browsing their $1 bins is always a fun experience.

BOOKOFF Pearlridge Center

Tucked away at 98-1005 Moanalua Rd #860 in Aiea, BOOKOFF is far more than just a bookstore – it’s a haven for nerds of all kinds. They boast a large anime section, an impressive variety of retro gaming items, movies, music, and more. We thoroughly enjoy shopping at BOOKOFF for its vast collection of used books, collectors’ items, movies, music, and video games. The time spent exploring their array of used items is always worthwhile.

Native Books at Arts & Letters

Take a trip down the road to the state capital, Honolulu, to discover some real gems of stores, like this one situated at 1164 Nuuanu Ave. It offers an intriguing selection of books penned by native and local writers and artists.
We were particularly impressed by the variety of genres, including history, food, culture, politics, literature, and memoirs. The children’s book section is an absolute delight to browse, and the staff there are incredibly welcoming. This unique bookstore, focusing on native Hawaiian subjects, is perfect for book lovers.

BĀS Bookshop

BĀS (pronounced “base”), a charming art bookstore at 1154 Nuuanu Ave in Honolulu, is owned by a delightful couple. Not only is the shop itself thoughtfully designed, but their book selection is also commendable. They go beyond being just a bookstore, functioning as a gallery and event space.
Visitors can enjoy quarterly exhibitions by Hawai’i artists, attend artist talk-story sessions or workshops, and even get their books signed by their favorite authors and illustrators. BĀS’s selection of books emphasizes graphic design, art, fashion, photography, & architecture, and they take pride in offering handmade goods from local artisans, including sustainable upcycled clothing, ceramic ware, and stationery.

There’s so much to see and explore on the island – and to do – that you’ll need a good vehicle. Whether you’re looking for a brand new 2023 Hyundai Elantra SEL or something pre-owned, you will find what you need with us, so come on down and visit us at Tony Hyundai Waipio of Waipahu
