The 2010 Hyundai Tucson trades upright SUV styling for a more modern crossover look. The first vehicle featuring Hyundai's new Fluidic Sculpture styling language, the 2010 Tucson is also the first model in Hyundai's 24/7 version 2.0 product initiative, meaning the brand intends to release seven new models in 24 months (by the end of 2011).

The 2010 Tucson was designed and engineered in Frankfurt, Germany, with input from Hyundai's U.S. and South Korean product groups. It is 3.3 inches longer and one-inch wider than the outgoing model, but weighs 61 pounds less. It also sits about an inch lower.

Like the outgoing model, the 2010 Tucson is offered with front- or all-wheel drive. The AWD system comes with a button for a 50/50 front/rear torque split, which helps in slick conditions and gives the vehicle some off-road capability. Downhill Brake Control and Hillstart Assist Control are available for the first time. GLS and Limited trim levels are offered.

For the 2010 model year, the Tucson comes with only one engine, Hyundai's Theta II 2.4-liter four cylinder. With 176 horsepower and 168 pound-feet of torque, Hyundai says this all-aluminum, 16-valve, dual-overhead cam engine produces 26 percent more horsepower than its predecessor. In fact, this new four-cylinder engine makes about as much horsepower as the outgoing 2.7-liter V6, which is no longer offered. Aiding the cause are Continuously Variable Valve Timing and a Variable Induction System that permits better breathing. Transmission choices include a new six-speed automatic with manual shift capability or a six-speed manual. EPA fuel economy estimates top out at 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway for a front-drive Tucson with the automatic.

For 2011, Hyundai will offer a more efficient engine option in the Tucson Blue model. The Blue model will come with a 2.0-liter version of the Theta II four-cylinder engine. Power and fuel economy numbers aren't yet available, but Hyundai says Blue model modifications will likely include low rolling resistance tires, enhanced aerodynamics, and a reduced final drive ratio. Hyundai also says the Blue model will cost less than the base model despite the modifications. All Tucsons with the automatic transmission will come with an Eco indicator in the instrument panel to help drivers drive more efficiently.

With a MacPherson strut front suspension, a multi-link independent rear suspension, larger front and rear stabilizer bars, and 38 percent more body bending rigidity than the Nissan Rogue, Hyundai says the Tucson is more agile than the outgoing model, with less body lean. It uses electrical power steering, which allows for calibrated steering efforts at all speed ranges and helps increase fuel economy.

Inside, the Tucson has more headroom and front legroom than the outgoing model. Hyundai also says it has class-leading rear legroom. With the split-folding second-row seats up, there is 25.7 cubic feet of cargo space. With them down, that expands to 55.8 cubic feet. Available amenities include a panoramic sunroof, a navigation system with a rearview camera, Bluetooth cell phone connectivity, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a CleanAir Ionizer, XM satellite radio, and iPod connectivity.
